DIAL at 40: Four Decades of Empowering Barnsley’s Disabled Community

Celebrating 40 incredible years of service, DIAL began its journey in 1985 with just two dedicated employees and a small team of passionate Volunteers, committed to providing essential advice and information to disabled people, their families, and carers in the local community. Fast forward to today, and DIAL has evolved into a professional organisation, with 21 staff members and 14 devoted Volunteers – each one driven by the same passion to make a lasting difference in people’s lives.

For four decades, DIAL has remained steadfast in its core belief: disabled people are the true experts in understanding their own needs. This people-first approach has been the foundation of our success, keeping DIAL at the heart of Barnsley’s disabled community and ensuring our ongoing impact. As we celebrate this milestone, we are filled with pride and excitement for the future, knowing that our commitment to empowering those we serve will continue to drive us forward for many more years to come.

The Early Years

Before DIAL, there was no centralised source of support or advice for disabled people and carers in Barnsley. Recognising this critical gap, Sharon Brown – our current CEO – was appointed by Barnsley District Council for Voluntary Service (BDCVS) in October 1985 to establish the first-ever DIAL in the area, alongside her colleague, Angela Jones. By 1993, DIAL had grown strong enough to become a registered charity. This year, we’re not only celebrating DIAL’s 40th birthday but also Sharon’s incredible 40 years of leadership and dedication to the cause.

The image has a grey background with four polaroid-style frames with images from DIAL's past. Photos include Sharon and another staff member holding up a large cheque, a staff member at a computer with old branding behind him, and two photos of staff members gathered together. Also on the image are 3 colourful balloons and '40' cartoon candle.

A Celebration of Sharon

Sharon’s journey with DIAL began from day one, transforming a small, unregistered organisation into the essential, widely respected charity it is today. Under her guidance, DIAL has become a lifeline for thousands of disabled people and their families; it’s no exaggeration to say that without Sharon, DIAL wouldn’t exist as we know it. Through financial challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic, and shifting landscapes, Sharon has been the unwavering force behind DIAL, securing essential funding and leading us through turbulent times.

Sharon’s remarkable contributions have been widely recognised. In 1999, she was nominated for the prestigious ‘Cosmopolitan Woman of Achievement Awards,’ and in 2003, she helped DIAL gain national recognition as a finalist in the BT Employer of the Year awards. Her leadership has not only ensured the charity’s survival but its thriving success, making Sharon’s 40-year milestone an extraordinary celebration in its own right.

The image has a light grey background with a rounded white speech bubble containing a quote from Sharon Brown, CEO of DIAL. The quote reads: "Being part of DIAL for the past 40 years has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. What started as a small team with a big dream has become a lifeline for many disabled people and their families. I’ve seen the difference we can make first-hand, and I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved together. This milestone is a celebration of the dedication, passion, and resilience of everyone who has been part of DIAL’s journey. I can’t wait to see what the future holds." Large olive-green quotation marks are positioned at the start and end of the speech bubble. To the left of the speech bubble, there is a photograph of Sharon Brown, a smiling woman with short blonde hair, wearing a black top and a silver necklace. Below the photograph, three illustrated balloons in olive green, teal, and orange float with thin black strings, adding a celebratory touch. At the bottom right of the speech bubble, Sharon Brown's name and title are displayed in bold orange font: "- Sharon Brown, CEO."

Supporting the Disabled Community for 40 Years

Last year alone, DIAL helped disabled people access over £7 million in unclaimed benefits – just one example of the life-changing support we’ve provided over the past 40 years. It’s almost impossible to measure the full financial impact DIAL has had, but what’s clear is that our support has empowered people with disabilities to lead fulfilling, independent lives. The right advice and information can be transformative, helping people gain the financial security they need to thrive. Alongside our essential welfare rights advice, we’ve also delivered numerous community groups and campaigns, helping people feel less isolated and fostering personal growth through our volunteer programmes.

The image has a light grey background with the heading "Some wonderful client feedback..." in bold brown font at the top. Below, six rounded white speech bubbles display different client testimonials in a casual, handwritten-style font. Each quote is accompanied by a large, stylized quotation mark in varying colours—olive green, teal, and orange—matching the balloons in the first image. The quotes express gratitude and appreciation for DIAL’s support, mentioning kindness, life-changing help, and expertise in benefits.

A Timeline of DIAL

This timeline highlights DIAL’s journey from 1985 until now, with all of our wonderful achievements in between, from securing crucial funding and launching key services to innovative projects to support the Barnsley community. As we look into the future, we remain passionate about possibilities and committed to our vision for a community that is truly inclusive.

The image is a timeline of achievements for DIAL, an organisation that has been supporting disabled people, their families, and carers for 40 years. The timeline is visually structured, running vertically along the right-hand side of the image, with key events marked by coloured dots and brief descriptions of each milestone. The left-hand side contains an additional section highlighting DIAL’s core services. On the left side, a section titled "Core Service: Advice Line & Welfare Rights" explains that DIAL has been providing welfare rights advice and disability information for four decades. It also highlights the organisation’s broader impact, including volunteering opportunities, community groups, peer support networks, and 'giveaway' campaigns that support individuals in times of crisis. The section ends with the tagline "Passionate about possibilities." written in bold orange and green text. On the right side, the timeline begins in 1985, marking the establishment of DIAL as a small organisation with just one employee, Sharon Brown, and a group of volunteers. It follows key milestones, such as DIAL becoming a registered charity in 1993 and securing its largest National Lottery grant in 1996. The timeline also showcases significant funding and partnerships, including a 2022 National Lottery grant and a 2022 collaboration with Barnsley Foodbank to deliver outreach sessions. Several major services and projects are highlighted. Notable initiatives include Warm Connections (2019-2024), which provides energy advice and winter warm packs, and Green Connections (2022-2023), which encourages people to explore nature and creativity. The timeline also acknowledges the COVID-19 pandemic (2020), detailing how DIAL secured emergency funding and adapted by launching Better Together (2021), an online support group. Recent initiatives include the Pants to Poverty campaign (2023), which distributes free underwear packs to vulnerable individuals, and the establishment of an Apprenticeship programme (2023-2024). Additionally, social inclusion projects such as Stronger Together (2023-2024) and Together at the Table (2024) continue to support individuals facing financial hardship by providing home-cooked meals and community engagement. The timeline concludes in 2024 with the launch of Time Together, a timebanking project for residents in the Central area, reinforcing DIAL’s ongoing commitment to empowerment, inclusivity, and support for the community.
