Celebrating Disability Pride Month 2024

What is Disability Pride Month about?

Disability Pride Month is celebrated each July. It honours the achievements of disabled people, encourages being more accessible, and fights stereotypes. The month aims to help people proudly embrace their disability as part of their identity and advocates for equal rights in the wider community.

To celebrate Disability Pride Month this year, we wanted to focus on sharing ways that anyone can show their support for disabled people and being an ally. This includes ways that you can support DIAL and disabled people in the Barnsley community, with a particular spotlight on disability in the media. Having an accurate representation of disabled people in the media is important as it validates the experiences of disabled people, builds empathy, and educates non-disabled people about the various types of disabilities. This helps to create a more inclusive society where everyone is respected and valued.

Ways to Be an Ally

Here are 8 simple things you can do to make a big impact. Being an ally to disabled people goes beyond being kind and considerate, it’s about going beyond to support and amplify disabled voices. Non-disabled people can use their privilege to take action, learn, and work with disabled people to create a more inclusive community.

In the bottom right corner there is a disability pride month flag with teal exclamation lines coming from it. Eight abstract rectangles each have an icon in DIAL colours that relate to each of the eight ways that you can be an ally to disabled people. These are: follow disabled creators on social media. Educate yourself through training and research. Consider both physical and digital accessibility. Advocate for disabled people in your local area. Listen to and learn from disabled voices. Recognise that some disabilities aren’t visible. Teach your children about disability and inclusion. Ask before giving assistance to disabled people.
