ESA & UC Assessment

When you make a claim for Employment Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit (UC), because you are unfit to work due to ill health, the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) will want to make their own assessment about your health conditions and how they affect your ability to work.
The test that the DWP uses to decide if you have limited capability for work is called the Work Capability Assessment (WCA).
You will be sent a form with questions about your health. This is the ‘ESA50’ form (for Employment Support Allowance), the ‘UC50’ form (for Universal Credit) or the ‘Capability for Work Questionnaire’.
This is your opportunity to explain to the DWP how your illnesses affect you and how they restrict your ability to work. This will be an ongoing process and you may have to be reassessed each year until your claim closes.
You have 4 weeks to fill out the health questionnaire from when the DWP send it to you. The DWP are strict about this and your claim may be closed if it is not returned in time. If you need more time, you should tell them as soon as you can. You will need to explain why you need more time and how much longer you need to finish the form.
Use our Employment Support Allowance and Universal Credit self help pack to help you complete your assessment form.

PIP Assessment

When you make a claim for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) will want to make their own assessment about your health conditions and how they affect your daily mobility and care needs.
You will be sent a form with questions about your health (PIP2). This is your opportunity to explain to the DWP how your illnesses effect you. They will then decide if you have to have a face to face assessment with one of their health care  professionals.
This will be an ongoing process and you may have to be reassessed periodically until your claim closes.
